LipiFlow Dry Eye Treatment at Our Tampa and New Port Richey Optometry Centers
If you're constantly contending with dry, itchy, irritated eyes, then you may be suffering from Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome. More specifically, you may a problem called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction that causes your tears to contain insufficient oils for proper eye protection and lubrication. The Eye Doctors has a solution so that you don't have to live with this chronic condition any longer. Our Tampa and New Port Richey optometry offices at offer a state-of-the-art treatment method called LipiFlow to get those glands working normally again.
Dry Eye and Melbomian Gland Dysfunction
Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when the eye's tear film fails to provide the ideal mix of hydration, lubrication and protection against outside threats. Normal tear film includes water, oil and mucous in a precise balance. The oil in our tears comes from a series of small glands behind the eyelids called Meibomian Glands. If these glands cannot produce enough oil to maintain tear film balance, the tears break up and evaporate too quickly to keep the eye safe and comfortable. This results in chronic dry eye symptoms such as:
- A feeling that there's something in your eyes
- Crusty deposits in the corners of the eyes
- Occasional blurring of vision
Dry eye can also lead to complications such as eye infections, corneal damage and an eyelid inflammation called Blepharitis.
LipiFlow: A New Frontier in MGD Treatment
While not everyone who suffers from dry eyes has Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), an estimated 86 percent of all dry eye cases do involve blockage of the Meibomian glands. Unfortunately, removing the waxy buildup that often plugs the glands has traditionally been a challenge. Massaging the eyelids and applying warm compresses yield only modest results. Another technique called Meibomian gland probing can remove blockages, but the Optometrist must insert a tool into the glands (an understandingly disturbing prospect for patients, even with anesthetic), and full results aren't always evident immediately afterward. There's always been room for a better way -- and that better way is LipiFlow.
LipiFlow is currently the only electronic MGD treatment system approved by the FDA. This method uses an Activator consisting of an inner eyelid warmer and and outer eye cup. Your Optometrist at The Eye Doctors will send a controlled amount of warmth and massage pressure through the Activator. The warmth goes to the inner eyelids to help liquify oil deposits, while the massage pressure is exerted on the outer eyelids to help dislodge the deposits. This combination of strategies opens up the melbomian glands so they can do their job properly again. Allowing new and healthy oil to flow freely through the glands, ridding you of your dry eye symptoms.
